Alaskan King Bed Buyer’s Guide

Looking for the Internet's biggest bed? You've come to the right place! AKS is a modern mattress brand dedicated to the Alaskan King sleep experience. Our ultra-comfortable, oversized mattresses let you sprawl out and relish the freedom of personal space—even while you share the bed.

But before you buy a mattress this massive, there are a few things you should know. Our comprehensive guide covers who should consider an Alaskan King, the required bedroom space, what accessories you'll need, and more.

What Is an Alaskan King Bed?

An Alaskan King mattress measures 9 feet wide by 9 feet long, making it the biggest bed size available online without customization. Just like their namesake state, Alaskan King beds are spacious and grand. Here's how they measure up to other mattress sizes:

  • Alaskan Kings have 11,664 square inches of surface area. That's 2,448 square inches more than the next size down, the Alberta King (9,216 square inches).
  • Like Alberta King and Wyoming King mattresses, Alaskan King mattresses are a perfect square. Texas Kings are rectangular and longer than they are wide.
  • Picture two Full size mattresses side by side. That's the width of an Alaskan King bed.

How Many People Fit on an Alaskan King Bed?

Alaskan King beds comfortably fit an assortment of people, and of course, cuddly pets. Whether it's for sleep or lounging together on movie night, an Alaskan King can reasonably accommodate:

  • 2 adults and 3-4 kids or pets, depending on size and age
  • 1 adult and 4-5 kids or pets, depending on size and age
  • Up to 4 adults

Should I Buy an Alaskan King Bed?

A giant bed is an investment in luxurious rest. However, these expansive beds are better suited for some than others. Before adding an Alaskan King to your cart, consider these pros, cons, and bedroom factors.

Who Alaskan King Beds Are Best For

  •  Alaskan King mattresses make an ideal family bed for co-sleepers and pet owners
  • An Alaskan King bed is a spacious sleep haven for couples and you’ll never have to argue again about who hogs the bed.
  • Big and tall individuals have plenty of space to stretch out.

Alaskan King Bed Pros

  • Sleep undisturbed with maximum personal space.
  • An Alaskan King bed automatically adds the look and feel of luxury to any large bedroom.
  • An expansive bed serves as a lavish lounge any time of day, especially if you position yours in front of a TV.
  • Quality Alaskan King beds are built to last with durable, deeply supportive materials.

Alaskan King Bed Cons

  • The bigger the bed, the more it costs.
  • Depending on the size of your space, an Alaskan King bed may take up most of your bedroom.
  • You have fewer bedding and accessory options when you buy an oversized mattress.
  • Our bed-in-a-box delivery makes setting up a new Alaskan King bed as simple as possible. But if you move, relocating your bed will require logistical planning and legwork.

Alaskan King Room Size Requirements

How big does your bedroom have to be to fit an Alaskan King size bed? To accommodate the bed, essential furniture, and ample walking space, you’ll need a room 16 feet by 16 feet or larger for an Alaskan King setup.

Alaskan King Mattress Types

Regardless of the mattress size you choose, deciding on a mattress type is the next step toward finding your perfect bed. "Mattress type" refers to a mattress' primary materials and construction; the most common options are foam, latex, hybrid, and innerspring models.

However, a bed as big as an Alaskan King requires maximum structure and strength. At AKS, we exclusively offer hybrid mattresses, which combine comforting foam with steel coils. We firmly believe hybrids are the best option for Alaskan King size beds because of their durability, balanced cushioning and support, motion isolation, edge support, and cooling—all essential features for a massive mattress made for luxury and co-sleeping.

What Is a Hybrid Mattress?

A hybrid mattress combines the best qualities of foam and innerspring mattresses with foam comfort layers on top of a coil support core. They get their contouring, pressure relief, and motion isolation from the foam and their spine-aligning support, strength, and durability from the coils. A hybrid mattress's multiple layers also work together for optimal responsiveness, meaning they adjust to your movements.

How Much Does an Alaskan King Mattress Cost?

If you’re considering an oversized mattress, there’s no doubt you’re wondering: how much is an Alaskan King bed? Depending on the mattress type, quality, and upgrades you choose, you can expect to pay about $2,500 to $6,500 for an Alaskan King size mattress. Remember, you’ll likely need a new base, bedding, and accessories as well.

Alaskan King Bed Unboxing and Setup

You can set up and sleep on your Alaskan King Sleep mattress the day it arrives! Follow these step-by-step instructions to unbox and assemble your mattress.

NOTE: Exercise caution while lifting, positioning, and unwrapping your mattress components. We recommend two adults complete the setup process.

Box Contents

Box 1: Compressed roll with two mattress core quadrants

Box 2: Compressed roll with two mattress core quadrants

Box 3: One compressed foam topper and one mattress shell

Setup Instructions

Excited to unpack your new bed? Follow the steps below for fast and easy assembly! Just remember to exercise caution while lifting, positioning, and unwrapping your mattress components.

Step 1:

Open all three boxes and remove their contents. Leave each component in its individual packaging for now.

Step 2:

Unwrap the mattress shell and unzip it to separate the top panel and fabric border. Set the top panel aside for later and spread the fabric border out on top of your foundation. Make sure the four corners line up with the base.

Step 3:

Start with one of the mattress rolls and place it on the ground. Note that the plastic roll contains two quadrants stacked on top of each other and then compressed. Make sure there's enough space for them to fully unravel before opening the plastic—once air enters the wrap, the mattresses will expand quickly and may exert force. Carefully cut the plastic wrap, and let the mattresses unroll and expand until they lay flat.

Step 4:

Lift one of the mattress quadrants and place it on top of your foundation within the fabric border. Then, line it up in one of the four corners of the bed. Do the same with the second quadrant; the order does not matter, as all the quadrants are identical.

Step 5:

Repeat steps 3 and 4 with the remaining mattress core quadrants. Together, they’ll create a 108-inch by 108-inch square.

Step 6:

Grab the mattress topper roll and position it on top of the mattress core quadrants. Be prepared for the roll to unravel and carefully cut the plastic wrap. Once the topper lays flat, discard the plastic and line the topper up with the quadrants so they meet in all four corners. Ensure the word “Medium” printed on the topper is right side up.

Step 7:

Now take the top panel from the mattress shell. With the backing facing downward, line it up and lay it flat on top of the mattress topper.

Step 8:

Pull up the border fabric so it covers the bed's edges. To secure the top panel, zip it to the top edge of the border fabric all around the mattress perimeter.

That's It!

Give the mattress a few hours to fully expand, then enjoy the royal treatment of an Alaskan King size bed.

Sleep Trial and Warranty

At Alaskan King Sleep, we offer a 120-night sleep trial and our lifetime warranty with every mattress purchase. The trial lets you get acquainted with your new bed and ensure it’s a comforting fit. If you don’t love it, you can request a return within the trial window and receive a full refund minus a $99 flat fee for pickup and return shipping.

What Else Do I Need with My Alaskan King Mattress?

Unless you previously owned an Alaskan King mattress, you’ll need all new accessories to suit this bigger bed size. A bed frame, pillows, comforter, sheet set, and mattress protector make a complete starter kit for anyone upgrading to an Alaskan King sleep setup.

Alaskan King Bed Frames

A large bed calls for an equally large bed frame. Alaskan King foundations, like other bed sizes, come in various styles, including simple metal frames, upholstered platforms, and more. At AKS, we offer an Alaskan King Bed Frame made with solid Cherry hardwood. The platform measures 109 inches by 109 inches, accommodating any Alaskan King size mattress.

How Many Pillows Do I Need for an Alaskan King Bed?

The most popular pillow formation for an Alaskan King bed is four King size pillows (typically 20 by 36 inches) side by side. However, your ideal pillow configuration depends on how many people sleep in the bed and what aesthetic you want to achieve.

Alaskan King Size Bedding

Alaskan King Fitted Sheet

Your fitted sheet should have the same width and length as your mattress: 108 inches by 108 inches. Be sure to check the pocket depth to ensure it can accommodate the height of your mattress.

Alaskan King Flat Sheet

Alaskan King flat sheets typically measure around 125 by 125 inches. However, the dimensions may vary depending on the desired overhang—a flat sheet doesn’t have to be a perfect fit.

Alaskan King Comforter or Duvet

On top, you’ll need an Alaskan King size comforter or duvet cover and insert. Most Alaskan King comforters and duvets measure around 136 by 120 inches, but again, dimensions vary depending on the overhang.

Do I Need a Mattress Protector?

While not strictly necessary, a mattress protector can go a long way to protect your new bed. We recommend something plush, waterproof, and hypoallergenic for comfort and longevity. You’ll need a 108-inch by 108-inch protector with deep enough pockets to fit the height of your mattress.

Live Large, Sleep Well

With all the possibilities an oversized bed unlocks, upgrading to an Alaskan King bed is more a lifestyle change than a furniture purchase. You’ll have more relaxation room than ever before, and you’ll sleep sound through the night with all the space you need to sprawl out. Hopefully, this guide has helped you decide if it’s time to make the switch.
