Mattress Size Guide: Oversized Beds
If you thought a King size bed was the peak of sleep luxury, think again! There’s a whole category of even bigger beds beyond the lineup sold at your average mattress store. In this guide, we explore the oversized mattress sizes available and how to decide on the oversized option that will transform your bedroom into an oasis. Whether you're a restless sleeper who needs space to sprawl out without disrupting your partner, part of a co-sleeping family, a frequent movie marathon host, or simply someone who cherishes luxury, this guide has all the information you need about these magnificent sleeping giants.
What Is an Oversized Bed?
An oversized bed is any mattress larger than the typical Twin, Full, Queen, King, and California King lineup. Oversized options include Wyoming King, Texas King, Alberta King, and the biggest bed size: the ultra-spacious Alaskan King. While you’ll find up to California Kings at most mattress retailers, you’ll likely have to order anything past that from a brand specializing in oversized beds.
Who Should Buy an Oversized Bed?
Oversized beds create a dreamy escape for relaxation and restorative sleep. While anyone can enjoy a vast mattress, they're ideal for co-sleeping families, pet owners, couples who prefer maximum personal space, and big and tall individuals. A luxury oversized sleep setup will automatically elevate your space, but you do need a big bedroom for these expansive beds.

Oversized Mattress Sizes and Dimensions
For anyone investing in an oversized bed, the first step is deciding which specific size will work best for your needs. We break down the specifications of each oversized mattress option below.
Wyoming King Bed Dimensions
The Wyoming King is the smallest of the oversized beds but still a whopping 84 inches by 84 inches (7 feet by 7 feet). A Wyoming King is 8 inches wider and 4 inches longer than a standard King. Couples can spread out, invite a pet, or co-sleep with one child with all that extra space.
Texas King Bed Dimensions
Texas King mattresses measure 80 inches wide by 98 inches long. With this much sleep space, you can easily fit two adults plus two children or pets.
Of the oversized mattress options, the Texas King is the only one with rectangular dimensions. Texas Kings are narrower than Wyoming Kings, but the additional 14 inches in length gives sleepers extra room to stretch their legs. This configuration makes Texas King mattresses popular for tall adults who want uncompromised sleep comfort but want to save some bedroom space.
Alberta King Bed Dimensions
An Alberta King bed—also known as a Vermont King bed or Alaskan King Mini—is 96 inches by 96 inches (8 feet by 8 feet). It’s the second largest bed size and spacious enough for co-sleeping families with three children or pets.
Alaskan King Bed Dimensions
An Alaskan King mattress measures 108 inches wide by 108 inches long or 9 feet by 9 feet. It’s the largest bed you can buy without customization! With an Alaskan King bed, an entire family of two adults and three to four children or pets can co-sleep with plenty of wiggle room. For movie nights or lounging, up to four adults can fit.
More Big Mattress Sizes
Wyoming, Texas, Alberta, and Alaskan King mattresses are the most common oversized models, but you may come across a few other options. The following family beds have the same length as a King or California King but are wider to fit kids and animals.
- Family Bed Medium: 108″ x 80″
- Family Bed Large: 120″ x 80″
- Family Bed XL: 144” x 84”

Which Mattress Size Is Right for Me?
Now that you know what oversized bed options are out there, you can better evaluate the ideal dimensions for your lifestyle. Consider these five factors to help identify your mattress size match.
1. Occupancy
How many people or pets will regularly sleep in the bed? How much personal space will they need to get comfy? It depends on the size and age of each individual, but generally speaking, here are how many people and pets can sleep or lounge in each oversized bed. (Remember, a high-quality oversized bed will last for the long haul, so consider your future needs if you have a co-sleeping family with plans to grow.)
- Wyoming King: 2 adults + 1 child/pet
- Texas King: 2 adults + 2 children/pets
- Alberta King: 2 adults + 3 children/pets OR up to 3 adults
- Alaskan King: 2 adults + 3-4 children/pets OR up to 4 adults
2. Room Size
How big is your bedroom? You’ll need a room at least 12 feet wide by 14 feet long to accommodate a Texas King bed and essential furniture with walkways. For a Wyoming or Alberta King, you’ll want 14 feet by 14 feet or larger. Lastly, we recommend at least 16 feet by 16 feet of bedroom real estate for an Alaskan King bed.
3. Budget
Naturally, the bigger the bed the more it costs. You can expect to spend about $2,000 on an entry-level Wyoming King mattress. For an Alaskan King mattress, entry-level models start around $3,000. That said, the bigger the bed, the more co-sleepers can fit or the more personal space you’ll get.
4. Availability
As previously mentioned, oversized mattresses are harder to come by than the standard Twin through California King models. If you have your eye on a specific mattress brand, be sure to check their size offerings. If you’re considering a few mattress manufacturers, their size lineups may make the decision for you.
5. Accessories
For anyone up-sizing to a Wyoming, Texas, Alberta, or Alaskan King mattress, remember that you need new sleep accessories to match. As with oversized mattresses, oversized accessories are a bit harder to find than standard sizes, so it’s worth researching your options before you decide on a bed. Essential accessories include a foundation, sheets, and a comforter or duvet.
